University of Florida and EmbanetCompass Expand Relationship by Launching Two New Online Degree Programs

Chicago, IL, Toronto, ON, and Orlando, FL (October, 2011) – EmbanetCompass, a premier provider of distance learning services, is pleased to announce two new online programs with the University of Florida (UF) – a Master of Arts in Mass Communications (MAMC) and a Master of Arts in Urban and Regional Planning (MAURP). Classes will begin in the Summer 2012 term, and both programs will include various specializations.

The mass communication degree will be offered through the College of Journalism and Communication which is over 50 years old and has four departments – Advertising, Public Relations, Journalism, and Telecommunication. The MAMC program seeks to advance understanding of how mass media and communications contribute to democracy, the economy and a diverse society, and to create graduates who can contribute to this understanding and dialogue.

“The industry of mass communications is rapidly changing and evolving, with customers now having such a strong voice through the use of social media,” stated Dr. John Wright, dean of the College of Journalism and Communication. “Offering this degree online will give our graduates the ability to keep up with this dynamic industry and become leaders in their field of expertise.”

The Master of Arts in Urban and Regional Planning will be offered through UF’s College of Design, Construction and Planning. Established in 1925, the college has become one of the largest design, planning and construction institutions in the country with more than 1,500 students. The planning curriculum is designed to provide a set of core studies and contextual projects which prepare the graduate for the practice of urban and regional planning in public or private agencies at both national and international levels.

Dr. Christopher Silver, Dean of the College of Design, Construction and Planning said, “Our educational mission is grounded in a commitment to provide students exposure to local, national and global perspectives in practice, and the program emphasizes planning, policies and design. Taking this degree online will enhance our ability to expand this commitment.”

“This relationship with the University of Florida started 15 years ago with our support of the Working Professional Doctor of Pharmacy program,” said Steve Fireng, EmbanetCompass President and CEO. “We were recently honored when UF selected us to become their preferred distance learning services provider, giving us the ability to extend our services to all Colleges across the university. Offering their quality degrees online will enable UF to extend their reach and generate new tuition revenue.”

University of Florida is consistently ranked among the nation’s top universities: No. 17 in U.S. News & World Report “Top Public Universities” (August 2010); No. 2 in Kiplinger’s “Best Values in Public Colleges” (2010) and No. 3 in the Princeton Review Best Value Public Colleges (2011). Awards include a Fields Medal, two Pulitzer Prizes, NASA’s top award for research, and the Smithsonian Institution’s Conservation Award. UF is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
